Amazon.co.uk Review 17 years in the making and beholden of a level of hyperbole verging on mythology--one that couldn't even be derailed by Axl Rose staffing his ever-changing troupe with people named Buckethead, Bumblefoot and Brain--Chinese Democracy would disappoint even if it arrived in a puff of smoke and nullified the impact of The Dark Side of the Moon, Revolver and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (not to mention Appetite for Destruction). And it doesn't do that, obviously. In fact, straight off the block it's in danger of rear-ending the Guns N' Roses legend, with the title track offering little beyond big production and "Shackler's Revenge" and "Better" emulating Linkin Park's industrial block building with a guttural vocal that threatens to turn the whole thing into a parody. But a desire to progress the G N' R template finds its feet as "If The World" unfolds into an improbable eastern drum 'n' bass orchestral trip-hop odyssey with some coarse riffing and the attitude of old is run through Pro-Tools and made 21st Century-proof on "Scraped" and "Raid N' the Bedouins". But if this album is to be remembered for anything in particular it will be the sky-reaching ambition of the balladry; "Sorry" with its "Nothing Else Matters" vibe and interlaced vocal choreography is cathartic and proud, "This I Love" sees Axl's larynx stretched and twisted, literally wringing the emotion from within, and "Catcher in the Rye" is one real moment of universal appeal. Chinese Democracy tries to be a lot of things but really works where Axl is left to be Axl and "November Rain" is left sounding like "Kumbaya". --James Berry

Not perfect, and possibly not as good as it should've been but still great! ! ! January 1, 2009 Well we all the controvertial topic on this and that is either "it's not good if slash aint there" or "this is not guns n roses". The best way I can describe this album is this is Guns N Roses or you prefer Axel Roses St. Anger, totally different albums but good in their own right that's the way i've seen this album so far. By no means the music on this album is the same as St.Anger to completley different genres and bands.
This is a big departure from Appetite for destruction, if you are looking for an album like that then you will be dissapointed you might try Black Tide's Light From Above instead? worth a shot it saves you your dissapointment from this album.
Now onto the album itself, in my opinion i think it's awesome not perfect but good for what it is, there are only 2 rockers on this album and that is the first 2 Chinese Democracy & Shacklers Revenge both have awesome intros and both awesome, the rest is pretty much the opposite of Appetite for destruction. My personnal favourites of this album are Chinese Democracy, Shacklers Revenge, Better, If The World, There Was A Time, Sorry & This I Love. The lyrics to most of the songs are pretty obvious that they are personal to Axel(at least I think so).
Obviously the guitar riffs and solos don't come close to anything Slash did with Guns N Roses but they are still great and Axel incorperates different music styles in each song most notable is blues and Rock. So overall this in my opinion was worth the money and Guns N Roses check it out but don't expect Appetite For Destruction or the original guns n roses style just be open minded. Rumors have it there are going to be 2 more from Axel who knows maybe him and Slash will make one more album together before their careers crash and burn.
Rock On! ! !
Different but brilliant December 31, 2008 Don't expect this to sound like Appetite for Destruction or the old line-up.
The first 4 tracks are really great and 'Madagascar' is very good too. In fact, there are no tracks which are terrible and as one of the other reviewers has pointed out, there is something catchy in all of them. There is the odd example where I think the guitar-work is overdone. You can listen to them again and again and get something new each time by focussing on different elements within each song because of the complexity. I also like the variety on the disc, which is a world apart from a standard band these days where every track is pretty much the same.
Listen first to 'Better', 'Madagascar' and 'Chinese Democracy'- if you like these then the album is worth getting.
buckethead!!!! December 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
never liked guns n roses, ibought this for my brother-in-law. when he decided to put it on during christmas day, i thought 'yawn..'..but, it hit me straight away how different it is. the production is excellent, axl's vocals are hell of a lot better and overall more heavier. the guitaring is awesome as well as the drumming, and when i looked at the booklet i dropped it in disbelief. for there i discovered buckethead was responsible for said riffing. and the drummer? cult legend BRAIN of buckethead / primus fame!! that, explains why this is so good. forget slash, i my opinion was over-rated anyway, buckethead gives him a run for his money! his trademark lunacy is written all over it! track 9 has lightning fast solos..is this the same band? no it isnt, but axl has replaced the old with a new fresh of breath air! never heard buckethead? check this out and then go for buckethead cds..welcome back!!

Is this phantom of the opera or some other musical? Possibly written by Andrew Lloyd Weber? Listening to this album made me think of jazz hands and over the top musical theatre. The old genius of guns n roses is there but Axl's voice has changed, before he could reach the high notes and sound slightly whiney, now he's nothing but whine. The music was written for the old band and badly executed by the new. If you had never heard the original you might like the musical ramblings of the band whilst being irritated by the singing but knowing and loving the original I find it hard to not compare and find this album lacking. I was willing to give it a go and listened to it a few times to get a feel for the songs but for me this is a metal version of high school musical. As scary as Axl's new face!
It's true... You really can't polish a... December 29, 2008 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
Over-produced. Uninspired. Generic. Half-baked. Entirely unremarkable. Total lack of coherence or direction. Pompous rubbish made buy an embarrassing middle-aged man in leather trousers FOR embarrassing middle aged men in leather trousers.
Of course it isn't 'Appetite' and nor would I expect it to be. That's the whole point.. After 15 years of writing, re-writing, recording, re-recording, fine-tuning and honing from a self-proclaimed genius, you'd expect some kind of dazzling, genre defying, challenging master piece wouldn't you? Instead we get a rather stodgy, safe, radio-friendly dad-rock album (at best.) that sounds exactly like the some of it's parts (A delusional has-been rock star + a stream of session musicians with no artistic or emotional input or investment in the material.)
There is absolutely NO WAY a new, unknown band would ever get signed on the strength of this.
...Or maybe it's actually the best album ever created, and in hundreds of years when the rest of man has evolved to catch up with Mr Roses's god-like genius it'll all make sense.
...Not THAT likely.
